Earlier this year, William Craddock traveled to the Pantanal region of Brazil and the River of Doubt, following in the footsteps of Theodore Roosevelt’s legendary 1914 trek. His recent book, Noble’s Gold , draws upon his experiences there.

Craddock lives in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where he is a managing director at Mercury Marine, a Wisconsin-based manufacturer of marine engines; he was formerly a State Department diplomat with the Agency for International Development. Here, he recounts his adventure.

He always had an adventurous spirit:
He lived overseas for 30 years. When he moved to Brazil, he read Through the Brazilian Wilderness [Theodore Roosevelt’s 1914 account of his travel along the River of Doubt with his son]. Even that was a long time ago, he still could see in his head what he was talking about. He decided to see Roosevelt’s River. He had already been to Pantanal [the world’s largest wetland, in Southern Brazil] many times.

The Paraguay River is the main thoroughfare through the Pantanal, and there are many species of fish and wildlife. So I combined a trip to the Pantanal with visiting the River of Doubt, following the path of Roosevelt’s expedition [source].
